From time to time, I share articles from around the web -- articles about books, reading, and writing -- that I found insightful, useful, and inspiring. I hope you benefit from it, too. :)
Here in the Philippines, there are very few local bookstores and secondhand bookshops. More popular are the big bookstores like National Bookstore, Powerbooks, and Fully Booked.
Being a frequent visitor of these stores, I assume that they are still far away from experiencing the frustrations that local bookstores in the US and Europe are experiencing (i.e. bankruptcy, increasing market share of cheaper digital books). After all, our major bookstores don’t just sell books; they’re also our go-to stores for school and office supplies. Besides, book lovers can always attest to liking the smell of physical books. But we also can’t deny that ebooks are so convenient, what with the advent of smartphones and tablets, and they’re on their way to taking over a larger chunk of the reader market.
It’s only fitting that bookstore owners and personnel — of major and small bookstores alike — think of innovative ways to attract book lovers. This article details two ways that I, as an ebook reader and someone who works in a digital startup agency myself, think are brilliant and worth trying, if we don’t want to lose physical bookstores. Whether you’re a bookstore owner/staff or a customer like me, I urge you to read on and share away this article from Matador Network.
