You probably know Mitch Albom from Tuesdays with Morrie, that famous book about an old professor and a student who meet every Tuesdays to talk about life. I remember several of my classmates reading that book but I haven't read it. Have A Little Faith, which was published several years after Tuesdays with Morrie, is the first Albom book I've read. I read it after signing up for a local book club. Since I wanted to attend the meetup, I had to read the book of the month. I didn't know what I expected but I know from friends who've read other books by Mitch Albom that it would be an easy read. And I was hoping it was, because ever since the last two weeks of December, I haven't finished any book at all.
Have A Little Faith was indeed an easy, quick read despite its themes -- life, death, faith, love, God. I've struggled with faith and religion in the last decade so most of the contents of this book hit me hard. Full disclosure: I am a Christian who hasn't been to church in almost 10 years, and my family is Catholic. In the more recent years, I have been a lousy believer, if you can even call me that. And more recently, I even asked if there was a God and if He was with me. This book has the answer to those questions, but you'd have to read it because I won't tell you.
Whether you're religious or not, it's easy to like the characters. I found myself drawn to them, eager to find out what else I can learn from them. But the one I could truly relate to was Mitch Albom. His apathy struck me as something very familiar, and his transformation, in a way, changed me as well. Mitch Albom was a great storyteller and though I did not cry while reading it, I felt my heart open to whatever Have A Little Faith had to offer. This book was inspiring, eye-opening, and most of all, comforting.
I urge all of you to read this gem. It doesn't matter what religion you're from because the lessons I got out of this book were universal. You might think you don't need it but you'll thank yourself for giving it a chance. So go, read Have A Little Faith.

wonderful review Joy, haven't read anything by him yet...but i was very fortunate to meet him in person last year during his book tour to Cebu...very down to earth and eloquent speaker and charismatic :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so great to see you back here, Joy! (Though I'm missing your e-mails.)
ReplyDeleteGreat review (:
I have to admit, this isn't the type of book that appeals to me. Personally, i am not a religious person, so I find it hard to connect to characters with strong beliefs. I don't have anything against books with religious themes, but I feel distanced from the characters. But I have plenty of friends who I think would benefit from a book like this. Great review, especially sharing your personal reasons for enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteRead his books, Laila. So far, I've only read one but I like his writing style so I'll definitely read another work of his soon. :)
ReplyDeleteI knooow! I haven't replied to your last email, have I? I've been so busy with work the past couple of weeks. Expect an email tonight. :D Thanks so much, Felicia!
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing though, Maddy. It's not very religious, at least not preachy. Basically (and maybe this is a spoiler), it tells you that it's okay to have different beliefs and it all boils down to respect. I do hope you'll have the chance to read it someday. :)
