Either I'm lucky or just really easy to please when it comes to Christmas-themed stories because I'm happy with the very few I've read. Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn was the most recent one and I think it's the best one I've read so far.
Here are 9 reasons why I love Dash & Lily's Book of Dares:
1. A romance that started in a bookstore? Count me in! That's probably every booknerd's ideal love story. And Strand is a very popular bookstore in New York (home to 18 miles of books!) so that's a major plus.
2. Dash. Let me borrow Lily's aunt's description of Dash: "I find young Dashiell to be not contemptible, for a specimen of teenage male. His persnicketiness is not nearly as delightful as he'd have one believe, but he has his own charm nonetheless. Articulate to a fault, perhaps -- but a forgivable and, dare I say, an admirable misdemeanor."
Dash loves words. Written words. He uses words like arcane, esoteric and rabblerouser. And he loves yogurt. So yeah, I'm in love.
3. Lily. She's a weirdo and an introvert but not insecure. I love how she changed throughout the book, how she became braver and more open about things.

4. Dash's friends are funny and chill. Boomer is so excitable, he's like a dog trying to be human that you just can't help but like him.
5. Lily's family. Can a family be more comforting? Lily has a gazillion relatives and they are the type you're always glad to have. They felt so real to me. You know how some relatives are so annoying but also very close to you? That's how it seemed to me.
6. Despite the short amount of time that Dash and Lily spent writing to each other, the romance did not feel hurried. It was lovely. Of course, I have my biases because my own love story started with letters that were passed around and left at hidden corners so there.
7. It made me laugh in the middle of the night. Humor is underrated. But it's important for me that a book evokes emotions and while I love a book that makes me cry tons, I highly appreciate a book that makes me cry tears of laughter. This book did that.
"Well," I said, "a few of my friends have actually met Lily, and I like to think they would've mentioned if she were eighty."
"Eighty!" The old woman feigned shock. "I'll have you know I'm not a year over forty-three."
"With all due respect," I said, "if you're forty-three, then I'm a fetus."
8. Max Brenner's chocolate pizza. Enough said.

"Too much. Too soon. Too fast. I put down the notebook, paced around the apartment."
"But whether or not you are here, you are here -- because these words are for you, and they wouldn't exist if you weren't here in some way. This notebook is a strange instrument -- the player doesn't know the music until it's being played."
"Sometimes, Dash, you take the fun out of fun," Boomer said with a sigh. "And you know what's left then? Nothing."
"You really think love needs to have a future?"
I hope that expresses just how much I love this book. Whether you're the type who's crazy about Christmas (like me) or the Grinch, I think you need Dash & Lily's Book of Dares in your life.
Only 21 days before Christmas! :D

Romance story from a bookstore... Na-excite ako saglit. Sounds really interesting. I'm curious with chocolate pizza. I want to try one. hehe.. Awesome review Joy. Thanks for sharing..:)
ReplyDeleteThis a great Christmas read, Vee. You should add it to your TBR. :)
ReplyDeleteI need to re-read this book. Now that I've been to The Strands, I can at least see how it all plays out. I loved this book, too. But it's been sooooo long.
ReplyDeleteYou've been to Strand?! I'm so jealous! I'm adding it to my travel bucket list.
ReplyDeleteJoy! okay now you made me excited for this...but should i wait for ur exciting surprise? hehehe...i dare to hope so! i will def put this on my Christmas tbr list....and that chocolate pizza mmmm...I LOVE CHOCOLATESSSSS!!! LOVE THEM!!!!
ReplyDeleteOhhh, how I LOVED this book! It really cemented my love of romantic adventures and the book left, following the clues. It honestly made my heart sing. I've never seen New York, but it was just so incredibly vivid. I completely agree, humour in our books is so underrated. I love a funny and heartwarming read and this one had it in buckets. I might reread this now too for the silly season.
ReplyDeleteLOOOOVED the review, reminded me of why I fell in love with this book in the first place <3
I wanna fall in love in a bookstore...
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I do often fall in love in a bookstoe - WITH the bookstore, or the books. That counts! :D

I ABSOLUTELY love this book. When Christmas comes around this is my go to book. It makes me miss the Strand when I am visiting my parents and I agree how can you hate a book that starts in a bookstore! I think everyone should take Joy's advice and read this.
ReplyDeleteThe book lost momentum for towards the end. It was pretty charming at first, especially with the whole bookstore thing and their refreshing voices, but the more I read the book, the more I found the two of them to be very annoying for me. The writing felt more and more pretentious, and the book started to feel silly for me. So yeah, I didn't enjoy it at all.
ReplyDeleteBut I wish I did, because I want to read some Christmas books right now!
Great review. Glad you enjoyed this one so much. I remember trying this one myself a while ago now, but I just couldn't get into it. I'm not sure what it was about it, but I ended up giving up about halfway through. Maybe I should give this another try.
ReplyDeleteOkay. You've convinced me Joy. ;) I originally hadn't heard of this one, but from your description it sounds too good to resist. Lilly and Dash sound like such relatable and well-written characters, and their romance sounds SUPER sweet (and bonus points to the author for having it start in a bookstore!) Thanks for sharing Joy, and, as always, fabulous review! Definitely going to have to get myself a copy of this!
ReplyDeleteI love your new blog name, Zoe! :D And yeah, I absolutely loved Lily and Dash. I hope you get to read the book soon. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, there could be a lot of reasons. Maybe the way of writing? Or the genre? Or your mood? I remember trying to pick another book of Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, I think it was Nick & Norah's, and I simply couldn't get past the first chapter. So I kinda understand where you're coming from, Charnell. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat about Let It Snow? Or My True Love Gave to Me? Maybe you'll enjoy those, Shannelle. :)
ReplyDeleteYay! Thanks for backing me up, Taylor! And wow, you've been to Strand? I can only dream of going there. :(
ReplyDeleteThanks again for visiting, Taylor. You're awesome. :)
That totally counts, Felicia. Happens to me all the time. :D
ReplyDeleteAwww... Thanks, Kelly. Wouldn't it be great if we get to see New York and go to all the spots Lily and Dash went to? :D
ReplyDeleteHahahaha! Pressure! Unfortunately, that's not the book I got for you. Shipping it to you soon. :D
ReplyDeleteOoh yes I've heard that the romance started in a bookstore! I find that very awesome, so I really want to read this :D
ReplyDeleteGo, Mel! I hope you enjoy it. :D
