Holiday Reading List

I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.
― Charles Dickens

Happy December 1st! This morning was met by rain but I didn't let it ruin my mood. It is December 1, I'm happy, I'm excited, nothing can ruin my day. :)

To kick off this awesome month, I am listing down five books that I plan to read this month. I was tempted to call it my "winter reading list" but we don't have winter in the Philippines so that would be inaccurate. So since December is basically one big holiday to me, "holiday reading list" it is. And it's just appropriate because I won't be reading anything dark or heavy this month -- just good ol' Christmas-y reads.

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

“I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”

So begins the latest whirlwind romance from the bestselling authors of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass back and forth at locations across New York? Could their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions? Or will they be a comic mismatch of disastrous proportions?

Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have written a love story that will have readers perusing bookstore shelves, looking and longing for a love (and a red notebook) of their own. [Source]

A Week in Winter cover

A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms. John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry, husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine; Anders hates his father’s business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone’s relief; the Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions. Super stoked to read all these beauties. It's also a good time to take a break from the usual YA and rom-com stuff I devour. I am feeling very fired up and hopeful. It's been a good year, but it's not over yet so I'll make sure that this last month of the year turns out to be the most awesome ever!

  1. well this is certainly a different reading list from your usual...but i understand the need to take a break from the usual read...i too take what i call chapter breaks from my current if i'm suddenly in the mood for a different genre :) i also like that you are keeping to a Christmas holiday theme on this one. I don't usually seek out those kind of themed books but i have read my fair share and most i have enjoyed. i hope you will have a great reading experience! and i am happy that you have enjoyed Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor (i believe this was adapted to a short tv show Christmas special sometime last year but i forgot what tv station :(

  2. I love Christmas so much that I actively seek for Christmas books and books to read and watch in December. I'm crazy like that. I googled the adaptation you were referring to and it's called Christmas with Holly. I'm definitely checking it out. :)

  3. Happy December to you too, Joy :D I was met with a really humid morning and then a totally sporadic fall of rain--t'was a weird beginning to the month ._o Anyhoo, Dash and Lily sounds so freaking cute--I hope you enjoy it, girl!

  4. Have you read 'Let it snow'? Three stories by three authors. I'm starting that today.
Also I quickly went through 'The Twelve Terrors of Christmas' and 'A visit from Sct. Nicholas' - which for some reason I've never read before.

  6. I so want to do this as well. I don't think I have too many Christmassy books on my shelves, come to think of it. Oh and I hope you'll enjoy Christmas at Lucky Harbor! I'm in love with that series. :)

  11. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dash and Lily!!! I was meant to wait until December to read that one too but I got excited and *accidentally* read it in October instead... woops! But honestly, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I really do hope you like it!! Read it and tell me what you think would you??
No winter in the Philippines?? Here in Britain we get winter's and we get them HARD! It's brutal. Even gloves won't help my icicle fingers...
Anyway! I love your blog :3 You have a follow from me about every way I possibly can!! -Evie x

  12. Hi, Evie! Thank you for commenting, I really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to reading your posts, too. :) And yes, I loved Dash and Lily's! I'm crazy about it. I'm actually posting my review of it today. :)

In the Philippines, there are only sunny days and rainy days. Our weather bureau says that "technically" we don't have summer but well, the whole year feels like summer. We used to get cold days from November to February but now, not so much? Maybe because of climate change? I dunno... I'd love to visit Britain someday. <3

  13. I like hardly ever read Christmas themed books. o.O The only one I can think of is Let It Snow which I read a bit early (in November I think) but I totally liked it. ;-) Totally fluffy! It's nice to take reading breaks and read random stuff, right?! :))

  14. I loved Let It Snow! My favorite was the first story, the one from Maureen Johnson. John Green's was meh. And yes to breaks! The whole December is my break. Hahahaha! Nice to have you back, Cait! :)
